Noriega embraces the politics of fraud

Houston Chronicle:

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Rick Noriega, the National Guard lieutenant colonel who served in Afghanistan, slammed Republican incumbent John Cornyn on Thursday for voting against the bipartisan majority on a bill to expand education benefits for military veterans.

Cornyn, however, favors a version sponsored by John McCain that he considers more effective for veterans as well as national security interests.

"We should be appalled and enraged as Texans and as patriots at (Cornyn's) behavior on the Senate floor" because the nation should fully back its warriors, Noriega, a state House member from Houston, said on the main campus of the University of Houston.

Noriega, a UH alum, recalled that veterans lived in trailers on the campus many years ago while getting a college education funded by the GI Bill.

Cornyn and presumptive Republican presidential nominee McCain last week were on the losing side of a 70-22 Senate vote for the benefits package, which would pay education costs for National Guard and military reserve veterans who serve active duty and meet other requirements.

Cornyn, citing a study by the Congressional Budget Office, said the bill was irresponsible because the offer of such benefits would encourage military personnel to use them rather then re-enlist in armed forces units. The Bush administration has branded the bill as too expensive.

...

Noriega's attacks are deeply dishonest. The Chronicle does a much better job of putting facts in perspective in this story. If Noriega were an honest candidate he could explain why he likes the Webb bill better than the one Cornyn likes. Instead he acts as if Cornyn has no interest in helping veterans. In laws governing fraud this is known as the fraudulent failure to disclose a material fact. If he were selling securities rather than a political position he could go to jail.

A man this dishonest does not deserve anyones vote.

Sen. Cornyn responds to Noriega's dishonest attack here with an explanation of the bill he supports. The bill Cornyn supports is vastly better than the Webb bill, which makes the charges by Noriega even more dishonest.
