Small-business owners and big-box retailers are banding together in a political campaign to push the state to require Amazon.com and other e-retailers to collect sales tax.

The efforts come as the Internet giant announced it is shutting down a distribution center in Texas, prompting lawmakers to draft opposing legislation over the sales tax issue.

Because the retail giant doesn't collect taxes here, it in effect has lower prices — and ultimately has an unfair competitive edge over brick-and-mortar vendors, those retailers say.

When you add in the delivery charges many times the tax advantage is a wash. Another relevant question is what government service is provided out of state retailers that would justify the tax. Local retailers receive state and local services that the taxes help to pay for. Delivery services already pay those taxes and incorporate the charges into their bill.

The Legislature needs to look at this as more than just a revenue stream or a protection racket for local retailers.

29 % of companies say they are unlikely to keep insurance after Obamacare

Conn Carroll: A new survey of 368 midsize to large companies found that 29% of them are considering terminating their active employee health care plans when Obamacare is full implemented in 2014. Only 71% of employers surveyed said they did not expect to drop their health coverage, while 20% said they did not know and 9% said they were planning to exit. The latest survey, conducted by Towers Watson, echoes an ealier survey by McKinsey & Co. finding that 30% of private-sector employers were planning to drop their employee health insurance coverage by 2014. When the Congressional Budget Office crunched Obamacare's spending numbers, they estimated that only 7% of employees currently covered by employer-sponsored plans would lose their plans. ...
