ISIS in the Philippines created its own Mosul type destruction

Washington Post:
Their city liberated from ISIS-linked attackers, Filipinos still seethe amid distrust and destruction

The heart of Marawi has been bombed and burned beyond recognition, its domed mosques pierced by mortar fire. Many residents are angry at the men who seized their city months ago in a failed bid to establish a caliphate. But they are also angry at the forces that fought those men, namely the Philippine army and its backer, the United States.
Marawi is what happens when you have an enemy that says if I can't have the city, no one will have it in its current state.   It is what happened in many of the cities that ISIS seized for its caliphate in Iraq and Syria.  It is what happened to Berlin and other cities in Nazi Germany.  When an enemy force refuses to surrender it leads to more destruction of those it holds hostage.

The upside of this kind of destruction is that people should be less likely to give ISIS supporters safe harbor in their communities.  If they do give them safe harbor, it will not end well for them.
