Are their still consequences for treason?

What she did appears to meet the definition of treason in most countries. She took the side of an enemy making war against her native country. I don't get the quandary. Is this more liberal handwringing over dealing with someone who is a traitor? It could be that they are trying to make terrorism a lawfare issue instead of a warfare issue.
