Russian cyber attacks show the need to harden energy supplies

NY Times:

Russia Could Have Switched Off U.S. Power, Officials Say

  • Russian hackers used cyberattacks to gain the foothold they need to manipulate or shut down energy, water and nuclear plants, the Trump administration revealed.
  • U.S. officials and private security firms see the attacks as a signal by Moscow that it could disrupt the West’s critical facilities in the event of a conflict.
The US needs to develop a system to disconnect from the internet and use auxiliary energy access to thwart the attacks.  The US also needs an effective counterstrike capability to fry the computers used in the attacks.
