US sanctions Russia over cyber attacks, criticizes WMD attacks in UK

Washington Post:
U.S. sanctions Russians over election interference, cyberattacks

The financial sanctions seek to deter Moscow from targeting this year’s midterm elections. It's a noteworthy step, as President Trump has shown reluctance to blame the Kremlin for tampering with the 2016 presidential race despite the U.S. intelligence community's conclusion that Moscow did so.

U.S., two major allies back Britain’s claim that Russia likely tied to ex-spy’s poisoning

The nerve agent attack “threatens the security of us all,” reads a joint statement from President Trump and the leaders of Britain, France and Germany.
This looks like Putin misplayed he had badly as did the Democrats who falsely accused Trump of colluding with them.

The Russians will be more isolated than ever.   They have missed their best chance at improving relations with the US and its allies.

I doubt that the sanctions will deter Russian cyber attacks.  I am still in the belief that the attacks in 2016 had minimal impact.  This time they may try harder to become more effective.  The best deterrence would be a counter attack of some sort.  I do not think the US would mess with the current election is Russia because the outcome has already been determined.  It is a return to show elections of the communist era.

Katie Pavlich is also reporting that there have been several Russian cyber attacks on the US energy sector.

According to one official, 4000 U.S. targets of Russian cyber attacks were notified last year about their vulnerabilities.

“The Administration is confronting and countering malign Russian cyber activity, including their attempted interference in U.S. elections, destructive cyber-attacks, and intrusions targeting critical infrastructure,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin released in a statement. “These targeted sanctions are a part of a broader effort to address the ongoing nefarious attacks emanating from Russia. Treasury intends to impose additional CAATSA sanctions, informed by our intelligence community, to hold Russian government officials and oligarchs accountable for their destabilizing activities by severing their access to the U.S. financial system.”
