One of Navy's first female fighter pilots brought damaged Southwest flight to speedy landing after engine explodes

NY Times:

Pilot Who Landed Plane Is Veteran With ‘Nerves of Steel’

Passengers hailed Capt. Tammie Jo Shults as a hero after an engine exploded on Flight 1380. She started out as one of the first female fighter jet pilots in the Navy.
Landing an F-18 on a carrier deck requires nerves of steel, to begin with.  I am not surprised that she was calm in landing the 737 even though it required a faster than normal landing speed in order to keep control because the wing on one side was also damaged.  I think her military experience was definitely an asset.
